Milson Foundry which was originally named E.N. Davis Foundry was established in 1953 and operated in Main Street Palmerston North.

The foundry had one coke-fired furnace that used to be fired up once a week for pouring the moulds with molten metal. Originally the Foundry produced many municipal castings such as Man Holes, Sump grates and these are still found in many streets in the Manawatu today.

The foundry was taken on by the next generation and shortly after moved to a factory on the corner of Milson Line and Malden Street. The larger factory was needed to cope with increasing demands as the foundry gradually increased production to include the commercial and agricultural markets as well as the increase in custom jobs for the local casting needs of manufacturers and engineers. At this time the business was renamed to “Milson Foundry” to reflect the new suburban location.

60 years on the business is owned by the third generation and a lot has changed. Production has increased from what was originally one melt per week to 6-8 melts per day using two 500kg capacity electric furnaces. With the Industrial Evolution of China and India who now produce most of the globe’s standard municipal castings Milson Foundry has been forced to diversify to survive. Now most of the castings produced are custom/uniquely designed products for customers who need high quality. This is what sets Milson Foundry apart from other foundries. Instead of selling most of the production, as in earlier times, to local customers Milson Foundry’s customer base covers all of New Zealand, Australia, California and the mid west of the USA up to Canada and stretching right around to UK and France, making Milson Foundry a true global provider.
